Work Out

Good Old Reliable Patrick

By Parthiban Krishnamoorthy

Over half a century to find the right workout…

Former athlete. Former military. Former meathead. From there, decades of preposterous and bizarre fitness plans, coupled with corpulent and porcine eating habits. Not very promising strategies.

Then, an epiphany. My daughter began doing Crossfit as part of her high school summer volleyball conditioning. She described what they were achieving in class and I was intrigued. Having spent the previous fifteen years as the biggest, ugliest single mom this side of Russia, it was time for a serious plan to get back in reasonable shape (other than rotund).

I showed up at Yurii and Kerry’s office and asked for a trainer. I was 51 years old and clearly presented a challenging, and perhaps risky project. They were welcoming and enthusiastic, and gave me Josh. The massive reconstruction project was on. Within three months, I had lost fifty pounds. Josh was able to get me doing exercises I had not attempted since Marine Corps boot camp some 30 years earlier. Even Yurii seemed impressed enough to get in on training me. I was given nutritional guidelines, incredible workouts, and most importantly- ENERGY. Gone were the days of feeling exhausted by the middle of the afternoon. You can’t put a price on that. Although I was brought back to earth when Annie at 6 months pregnant destroyed me by 3 minutes on a WOD, I was hooked.

From there it was on to the noon class. A great group. Fantastic teachers (even the ones who make fun of me- Courtney!). I am fortunate to participate with these wonderful folks Monday through Friday every week (unless my children at college provide me with a new crisis).

No matter what your age or fitness level, Crossfit can change your life. Most of us over 50 have some bumps and bruises, but workouts can be scaled to meet anyone’s needs (take it from me, the king of scaling).

For anyone that knows someone 50 plus that could use some improvement with their fitness and the gift of newly found energy, get them in for the new class. Let Yurii, Kerry, Josh, and all the other fabulous and talented trainers be your fitness guardian angels, so you can put off the visiting angels…
