Work Out

Life before crossfit:

Looking back, my fitness life before crossfit was non-existent. I worked a stressful job, my nutrition consisted of not eating breakfast, usually fast food or convenience store deli food for lunch and sitting down and eating as much as I could for dinner knowing that I was probably not going to eat for the next 14-18 hours because of the excuse of “ I don’t have time!” I brought work home with me and this made my family life tough as well as I would take a lot of my daily frustrations out on them. In june 2015, I quit my job of 17 years. With this change came happiness, and with this happiness I found I added weight quickly. One november morning as I was getting ready for work, I was putting on my socks and noticed that it was difficult for me to bend over and put them on as my stomach was getting in the way. My brother was a member of crossfit billings and I had watched him become more toned and fit, he had talked to me in the past about coming in to try a class out. On my lunch hour that day, I went to the gym and met with kerry and she explained all the details on elements class, class schedules and times, and introduced me to yurii.


There are so many things to like about crossfit billings:

• the owners and trainers: they treat you like normal people!

• accountability: the trainers hold you accountable and they know your limitations and your strengths. They not only train to your strengths, but they also find your weaknesses and work with you to improve.

• owners and trainers are trained and experienced! They stop you and coach you when you do or attempt to do a movement wrong. They are engaged and constantly watching you to make sure you are doing the exercise correctly to avoid injury.

• community: the gym is like a community. You meet new people, build new friendships, and find out a lot of people have joined for the same reason that you did.

As I continued on this new fitness journey and attending 4 classes per week I started to receive complements from family members, friends, co-workers and trainers about my transformation into loosing weight and building strength and being in a much friendlier mood. My son finished up middle school basketball and was heading into not having a lot of physical activities on the horizon. He would often ask me when I returned home from the gym what I did in class. I would tell him what we did and sometimes do a demonstration. I decided to sign him up for classes and he enjoys coming to the gym to workout with the 6:30 pm crew and myself. Bringing him into the crossfit gym has done a lot for him as a person in the short time he has been coming, it has built self-esteem; strengthen him not only physically but also mentally. Doing this together has also built a stronger bond between him and I . By doing workouts with him it is very exciting to see him do things that I cannot do or are very difficult for me like rope climbs, and you get excited and get to encourage him when he is attempting to find a new 1 rep max lift. Also, all the work he puts in and the results he gains is because of him, it wasn’t earned on a football or basketball team, it was all done by him. In the end, I think it is important for him to see that in life there is always room for improvement, don’t be afraid of challenges and hard work, and don’t quit because something is hard.
