Justin's CrossFit Story
“Check your ego at the door.” Probably the most important advice I received from Kerry when I signed up for Crossfit in November 2015. I was a 37 year old who let himself go due Life being busy. Mainly a football player in high school, my weight lifting experience included: Put as much weight on the bar and see if you can lift it, and the three movements where Clean, Bench, and Back squats. After school I did not continue any type of high intensity fitness programs. I had tried a Global Gym in Billings, but with no success or accountability, it was easy not to go. I was pretty much a slim build body type and was very difficult for me to put weight on. I always had people tell me, wait until you reach 30 years old. This became a reality in November of 2015, when getting ready for work I found it was getting more difficult for me to put my socks on because my stomach was getting in the way. I had been having back problems for 6+ years as well and was getting disappointed in the way I was heading. Sitting behind a desk most of the day and a poor diet, I knew I had to make a change. My Brother Brian, had told me several months before about CrossFit Billings and told me that I should try it, that I would like it. I was hesitant and thought no, my back hurts and I truly did not want to even do it, but that day in November, I had enough and went and talked to Kerry and Yurii on my lunch break. My first elements class was with Josh. As he briefed the WOD, I remember thinking I can do the RX’d weight, no problem. Josh gave a little laugh when I told him I wanted to do the prescribed weight, and stated, “You know that is a heavier weight don’t you?” By the end of the work out, I believe I was down to bare barbell.

I do not remember which route I took to get home that night, but I do remember the look on my families face when I walked through the door and waddled in and sat down. I was sore for a long time, but I was hooked from the first class. The things I enjoy most about Crossfit is it is challenging, and highly addictive. There is always something to improve on, and I don’t think people that have not done Crossfit realize how difficult and technical this sport is. The things that I enjoy most about Crossfit Billings is the Community and Family feel of the place. The Coaches are always upbeat and push you to be better and coach you every step of the way. Not only are the coaches supportive, your classmates drive you to be better as well. I also think that Yuri and Kerry continue to do a fantastic job at being a forward thinking “Box”, from the programming to getting feedback from their members and having the Coaching Staff that they have. The only REGRET that I have with starting Crossfit, is that I did not start earlier!
