My Crossfit Story: Leslie Schafer

I am 22 years old and I grew up in Bozeman Montana. I have been doing crossfit for about 2 and a half years now both here at Crossfit Billings and at Crossfit Bozeman. It all started when I was 11 years old, I was diagnosed with Osteochondroma, which is a bone disorder. Extra bone grows around my growth plates mostly around my knees and shoulders. I have had 13 surgeries from it and, the aftermath it has caused, in the last 10 years. Needless to say, my childhood was a bit different than most. I have always loved the outdoors, snow skiing, waterskiing, hiking, and playing soccer. But activities were never easy, it always seemed like I was in pain, having surgery, or recovering from surgery. I loved playing soccer and started when I was 5 but had to quit playing in high school due to too many surgeries and not enough recovery time in between. It was my sophomore year of high school when it really hit me, that I missed the competitive nature of playing on a team, and still wasn't able to do all the other things I loved as much as I wanted to, especially waterskiing. There were multiple summers, where I was deemed the designated boat driver because I was in recovery mode. I love to drive the boat, but riding behind it is much better!! When I started college, I finally had made it more than 6 months without having surgery and one of my good friends convinced me to try Crossfit. I was very hesitant for a long time because I was always wondering when my next surgery would be, if I could even do it, and if my body would hold up in all those crazy movements I had seen in videos! I finally decided to try it after a lot of coercing, and quickly fell in love. I had forgotten how much I liked being active, especially with other people, and how much I missed the competition aspect of sports. It definitely wasn't easy though…I found out my ACL was torn in May of 2015 and went in for surgery 24 hours later, due to the doctors thinking it had been gone for about 3 years and were afraid my knee would give out on me any minute. I have no idea how my ACL was torn, but it was most likely due to so many surgeries on that leg, that changed the alignment. So there went another summer of waterskiing…Then I moved to Billings in August to finish my nursing school clinicals for the next 2 years. Some friends from Bozeman told me to head straight to Crossfit Billings, so I did. I was a bit intimidated when I walked in the door and the first person I saw was Yuri! But everyone was very welcoming and I knew I was in the right place when I saw the Bible verses on the wall…what is better than Jesus and Crossfit?! The 6am’ers quickly took me in as one of their own and it is my normal go to class. I've always been a morning person and love rolling out of bed and working hard for an hour, it makes the whole day go a lot better! Surgery came knocking at my door again this past summer, when the same ACL knee needed a meniscus transplant, so another summer of boat driving! But I feel the strongest I have ever felt in the last 9 months. I feel like I have finally jumped the hump of always feeling broken into what is my new “normal”. I contribute this all to Crossfit and especially the coaching here at Crossfit Billings. My last two surgeries were the easiest to bounce back from because I was strong going in, and I was able to jump right back into the gym, really scaling the workouts, but always moving forward!


My favorite part about Crossfit is the community, the coaches, and the ability to start at any fitness level. No matter who are, the WOD can always be scaled! The days I come in feeling broken to the days I come in feeling “normal”, I can always get the workout done! Crossfit has given me an outlet of competitiveness that I always missed, even if it's just trying to be better than yesterday, or trying to keep up with Karen! :) The best part about Crossfit Billings is the people and the gym vibe. There is something really special about this gym. Crossfit is its own community in itself, but this gym is on a whole different level. Everyone is so encouraging even to people they may have just met! The coaches care about each and every person and they make sure everyone is pushed to their limits! Like my mom says…”they must spray something on those walls, you are addicted!” Yes it's true…but Crossfit is one of the best things that has ever happened to me! Just remember “strength is nothing more than how well you hide the pain!”
