Nick and Kayla Johnson's Story
Hey guys! We are Nick and Kayla Johnson and we were asked to tell you a little about our journey with Crossfit. We were both born and raised in Gillette, WY and we ended up meeting in college at the University of Wyoming. Nick was late to the college game, as he took some time off after high school to go play juniors hockey in Boston. I graduated a couple years prior to him and ended up moving to Bozeman. I played all kinds of sports growing up, including basketball, volleyball and track. By the time I got to college I was burnt out and decided one day after stumbling upon practice to give rugby a try. Turns out I LOVED it and ended up playing for a couple regional US teams, as well as the University of Wyoming, but my nursing major brought me to Casper for my last semester so I had to give it up. By the time I moved to Bozeman I had been pretty lazy, focusing most of my time and energy on work, and had completely fallen out of a set workout routine. I really missed the team, competitive type atmosphere. One of my coworkers suggested I try Crossfit for this reason, and I thought what the heck!

I ended up joining Crossfit Bozeman after just one workout (which happened to be Murph, btw) in June 2013 and I haven’t stopped since. Nick, all the while was continuing to workout at the gym, but had started to do the same workouts I was doing. He liked it, but he was missing the whole atmosphere of Crossfit doing them alone at the gym, without a coach to encourage and guide him. I ended up moving to Billings, and shortly after I moved here we joined Crossfit Billings. The coaches and atmosphere were incredible from the very beginning! Kalsu was our first workout together at CFB, Annie was the coach for that workout and I vaguely remember her saying “you two move pretty well, just go for it!” Halfway into the workout it turned from thrusters and burpees, to a 5 burpee EMOM (no time for thrusters!) Welcome to Crossfit Billings, but we kept coming back! Nick and I work completely opposite schedules, and our workouts at CFB are sometimes the only time we get to spend together some days, but we both enjoy making ourselves better in that time. We absolutely love CFB and the family atmosphere and support that it entails, hands down the best part of our day!
