Michael Johnson's (MJ) CrossFit Story
My Crossfit Journey began in October of 2014. I was 42 years old and not really looking to get into better shape. I was happy with what I was doing at the time. I was doing Tae Bo, I was being Chuck Norris by using my Total Gym, and I just bought an Xbox Kinect to workout with. That’s right, nothing says fitness better than an Xbox right? Plus I was doing martial arts for a living. What else did I need?
Well, it seemed like I needed a lot more. My good friend and martial arts mentor Dennis Forleo had just started this workout regimen called Crossfit. Crossfit? Doesn’t that kill people? That was my first thought at least. He was telling me all about it. How great it was. How he couldn’t believe the WOD’s they put you through. And so after some coaxing, I gave in and went to my first class with Dennis. It was during a buddy week, so I didn’t really think anything of it. I’ll just go, appease Dennis, and then go back to my norm. I had no reason to think that this thing would be a life changer. I had no intentions of signing up. But then I met Josh. And then Yurii, And then Kerry. And then I did the workout. It was horrible!! The worst thing I’ve ever done!! And I was sold!!

temp-post-imageAnd so I did my Elements with Yurii. At that time, again, I thought I was in decent shape. Man, I was so wrong!! It was only Elements, and I could hardly walk or move the days after I signed up. But I kept grinding. I kept pushing. I was not going to let the soreness, the muscle fatigue, the pure torture of some of these workouts deter my attitude. Now I’m 44 years old. I am doing things now with my body that I probably couldn’t do in my 30’s. Not only am I stronger physically, but mentally as well. Crossfit pushes you to your limits.

I cannot thank this great staff and environment enough!! Yurii, Mack, Josh, Kerry, and anybody else who gets in to coach. I know my limits. But more importantly, THEY know my limits. Always pushing me. Always encouraging me. I’m never going to be a powerlifter like Yurii or Mack. I don’t care if I need to scale a workout. I still get excellent results. But I have noticed as I’ve progressed through this Crossfit journey, that I’m RX’ ing more. I’m getting more PR’s. It’s just a great feeling to achieve something you never thought possible! Again, at age 44, I am in the best shape of my life. I even completed my first Crossfit Open this year. So Yurii, how bout we get out of here with a stomp, stomp, clap and turn up that “Eye of the Tiger” radio and get this thing started? Let’s do this!!!
